Southern Baptist Agency Nixes Controversial Charismatic Practice for New Missionaries
(IN) A Southern Baptist Agency will no longer appoint missionaries who use a controversial charismatic practice. The International Mission Board is nixing a 'private prayer language' or speaking in tongues. IMB president Jerry Rankin had previously been known for taking part in the contentious practice. The Associated Baptist Press reports the Southern Baptist Convention agency already excludes people who speak in tongues in public worship from serving as missionaries.
However, IMB trustees voted to broaden the qualifications to exclude missionaries who take part in speaking in tongues in private. The Southern Baptist Agency believes that those who spoke in tongues in the New Testament clearly did so in a legitmate language that was understandable to others. The prayer policy will not apply to IMB missionaries appointed before Nov. 15.
