Nairobi Residents Say Several Beaten, Hacked to Death in Slum

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP)  Residents of a Nairobi slum say several people have been beaten and hacked to death with machetes as ethnic fighting over Kenya's disputed election flares again.

Elsewhere in the country, police managed to quell more than two days of fierce fighting around a Catholic monastery in the Rift Valley.  Twenty-two people were killed there and some 200 homes burned.

The re-election of President Mwai Kibaki (mwy kih-BAH'-kee) last month has tapped into a well of resentments that have regularly resurfaced during elections, but never so deadly or for so long. A government commission says more than 600 people have been killed.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga (ry-EE'-luh oh-DING'-uh) accuses Kibaki of stealing the election and has called for another ``peaceful protest" later this week.
