Elderly Missionary Couple Attacked in Kenya
KITALE, Kenya (AP) An elderly missionary couple is hospitalized in Kenya following a brutal attack.
A Canadian newspaper, the National Post, reports that a gang of intruders raped and choked 66-year-old Eloise Bergen in the couple's home and broke her jaw after breaking the arms and legs of her 70-year-old husband, John Bergen. Both also were beaten and slashed with machetes.
The newspaper says seven people have been arrested, including two security guards the couple had hired to protect them. But the Bergens are reportedly anxious to forgive their attackers. Eloise Bergen told the National Post, "It's in both of our hearts to go to the prison and tell them about our forgiveness."
The Canadian-American couple -- John Bergen is from British Columbia and his wife is from Georgia -- had moved to Kenya recently to minister to widows and orphans.
